Uganda- Placements for Medical Students and Residents

Opportunities for both students and residents are described below:
A. Makerere Faculty of Medicine, is the oldest medical school in Uganda, located in Kampala.
COBES Programs - working with Makerere medical students and tutors

There are accomodations in the community and food available. Students/residents may do their own individual project or clinical work. Both general and antenatal placements vary but one near to Kampala is at the Kilullu Buziga Health Center, where Sister Margaret is in charge.
2. St. Stephens Hospital, a Level 4 health Center

Students/residents may do own project – Currently, two medical students are working on a lead toxicity project Summer, 2008 - see report

B. Mwanamugimu Nutrition Ward, part of Mulago Hospital in Kampala
Dr. Hanifer Bachou, physician with pediatrics and nutrition training, is in charge of this ward.
Most common causes of illness among children are pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria, all combined with serious malnutrition. Sinai students/residents may work with Makerere medical students in their 3rd, 4th, and 5th year.

Students/residents may conduct own project while working on ward seeing ill children
C. Mu-Jhu Research Center in Mulago Comlex

The center is well funded and well-run. Children with HIV/AIDS are seen here with many ongoing research projects. Students/residents may also conduct own research project, with IRB approval, both at Makerere and at MSSM. In addition, there are opportunities to work with Makerere medical students.

E. Soft Power Health in Bujagali Falls, above Jinja – approx. 1.5 hours east of Kampala.

Accomodations with food available, as well as white water kayaking.
Level 2 Health center with good health officers
Dr. John Galvin is an excellent source of information at MSSM Outreach programs into the local community, with sales of treated malaria nets and health education on such topics as ORS, family planning etc.
Another closely related program, the Soft Power Education, is in same location, providing a strong link with local primary schools.
F. UNICEF in Kampala
Students/residents may work with Dr. Gloria M. Kodzwa, email gkodzwa@unicef.org
Students/residents would function as local UNICEF intern, organized through New York office of UNICEF; may conduct own research, or work on recent survey of all of the health facilities in Uganda jointly conducted with UNICEF, report pending.
G. Millennium Village Project in Ubiira, 1+ hour north of Mbarara - which is 4-5 hours West of Kampala

Tutors are young physicians from Mbarara Medical School
Overall community is 45,000 - very rural with UNDP village health councils, with many community development projects ongoing
Health Centers level 2, being upgraded to level 3 and 4
Clinical work with pediatrics, medicine, adolescents - can see patients; cesarian sections are locally available for difficult deliveries

H. International Hospital in Kampala

New and modern facility, with connection to 5 level 3-4 health centers throughout the country, including locations at Jinja, Entebbe, Mbarara, Lira, and Juba
Dr. Clarke is in charge of a nursing school, a general health insurance agency and a construction company and many of the Mulago Hospital surgeons operate in his hospital.
I.Kiwoko Hospital in Luwero, about 1 1/2 hours north of Kampala

Dr. Wilson is an Irish medical missionary, and the facility has 200 beds, with outreach into community; very well run, sponsored by Church of Uganda
There are accommodations and food for students and residents, but July and August are crowded and difficult for placements.
There are 2 nearby adolescent centers, run by Kiwoko, with health education and clinical services, and schools for nurses and pharmacists
Contact for placement should be done far in advance of dates
Additional Information: The trip to Uganda can be made on British air flights from JFK to London, change planes and a direct flight to Entebbe airport in Uganda. There is a 45 minute trip into Kampala from the airport. It is suggested that a Uganda single trip visa be obtained from the Uganda United Nations office in New York - details and costs, etc. available on-line. US dollars in recent $100 bills are advised for changing into Uganda shillings once in country.
Travelers checks are generally not accepted. Check with CDC on line, CDC.gov, for necessary vaccines and current medical advice.
