Residency Global Health Track Application

Program Structure: The Global Health Residency Track consists of a semester-long preparatory course, followed by a public health or research project in the field. The course is offered annually through Mount Sinai's Master in Public Health Program, and is a requirement prior to departure for field placement. The 6-8 week field work experience takes place in the senior year. Residents from programs in medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, and psychiatry and are eligible for application.

Didactic Component: The Global Health Field Work Preparatory Course is a case-based class that allows participants to acquire knowledge and skills needed for global health field work by working through a mock project from inception to implementation over the course of the term. Classes are scheduled for evenings to allow for maximum resident participation. Applicants must be prepared to commit some of their free time to the program. Attendance is required and receipt of the travel stipend is contingent upon class participation. We will work with your chief residents and program directors to ensure that you can make it to the majority of your classes.

Field Work Residents will have as much as two months of protected time to finish a public health or research project in the field. Project design is begun at the start of the track in conjunction with a mentor that has expertise in the resident's area of interest. Residents are required to conduct a project at one of the Global Health Center's partner sites. Presentation of project outcomes, a written abstract, or publication of study findings is expected upon return. Look at last year's field projects for examples.
