Residency Global Health Track Application

Program Structure: The track includes a didactic component that takes place over the course of two years and a two-month fieldwork experience in the senior year. The program is interdisciplinary and is open to residents from programs in medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, psychiatry and Obstertircs-Gynecology.

Didactic Component: The didactic component of the track is designed to introduce residents to the major global health issues, and to help them develop a research or public health project for their time in the field. Residents will participate in an orientation program, a global health seminar course, a 2-day Tropical Medicine Workshop and an extended field project. Classes are scheduled for nights to allow for maximum resident participation. Applicants must be prepared to commit some of their free time to the program. Attendance is required and receipt of the travel stipend is contingent upon progam participation. We will work with your chief residents to ensure that you can make it to the majority of your classes. Applicants who already have an MPH degree are encouraged to apply; their didactic experience will be individualized to enhance their Global Health knowledge. For further details, review this year's schedule.

Field Project Residents will have up to two months of protected time to finish a public health or research project in the field. Project design is begun at the start of the track in conjunction with a mentor that has expertise in the resident's area of interest. Residents are required to conduct a project at one of the Global Health Center's partner sites. Presentation of project outcomes, a written abstract, and publication of study findings is expected upon return. Look at last year's field projects for examples.

The deadline for applications to be returned to your Program Director and the Global Health Center faculty is December 1, 2009.

Criteria for Acceptance: The selection committee is most interested in seeing that the applicant has demonstrated a commitment to the field of global health and is sincere in his or her intent to develop a useful role in treating underserved populations as part of his/her future career. Though previous experience or education in public or global health is not required, it will be taken into consideration. Good luck and thank you for applying!
